Adrian Weekes, 52, was hailed a hero when he was pictured tackling the 15-year-old thief at the Co-op store in Stroud, Gloucestershire, last week.
The hilarious image showed the worker of 16-years apparently sitting casually – arms folded – on top of suspected thief.
But it is understood that after the picture was spread on the internet, Mr Weekes, was suspended by Midcounties Co-operative following an investigation into the incident.
The move prompted more than 450 people to sign a petition demanding the popular shop assistant could kept his job.

Now staff at the Co-Op have confirmed Mr Weekes is back working at the store.
The shoplifter was ordered to pay for the goods he stole, has been banned from the store and also given a Restorative Justice Level One order.
