The city of Karachi in Pakistan has successfully poisoned over 800
stray dogs and counting in a bid to curb the general number.
In an extreme measure to
eradicate stray dogs, the Pakistani city of Karachi arranged to have
over 800 canines poisoned to death.
Municipal
workers have been pictured clearing out the carcasses of the canines on
the street of the city, in preparation for disposal.
The
killing which can be likened to genocide of some sort, reportedly took
on Thursday, August 4, 2016 following serious complaints from residents.
Defending
their actions, the District Municipal Corporation disclosed that it had
been a necessary if extreme measure to curb the population of strays
within the city.
Muhammad Naeem, the administrator
of the Corporation revealed to Pakistan's Express Tribune that at least
800 stray dogs, mostly from two sections of the city, Saddar and
Lyari, have been killed in the exercise.
The
municipal authorities carefully arranged to have poisoned meat to be
used in luring the dogs, kept in different areas on Wednesday, August 3,
2016, as the meat shops closed.
He said: "We made sure that no children were nearby".
So
far, the number of stray dogs killed all over Karachi which has a
population of over 20 million, although yet to be estimated, might run
into the thousands.
Animal
rights activists have condemned the practice as it is hardly the first
time this method has been employed to cull the stray dogs. Jinnah
Postgraduate Medical Centre reportedly treats almost 7,000 people for
dog bites annually.
They have urged the authorities to adopt a more humane method of handling the situation.
