President Muhammadu Buhari’s has described the practice of appointing ministers as a ceremonial norm.
Buhari, who has delayed the appointment of ministers since he was sworn in on May, 29, said ministers are just present in governments to ‘make a lot of noise’ as they virtually do nothing.
In an exclusive interview with France 24 tv François Picard, on Wednesday, September, 16, the first Nigerian to unseat a predecessor in a democratic transition claimed that ministers are only there to fulfill all righteousness as it is the civil servants and technocrats who do the job of governance instead of the ministers. He added that most Nigerians are agitated about the ministerial appointments because they just want to see their own people in government and what they will gain personally from his government indirectly.
Buhari said that some of the ministers have been in the system for as long as two decades, which makes the entire system all ‘political’. He reiterated his promise to name his ministers by the end of September, noting that the month seems to be running faster than usual. ‘The end of the month is coming too quickly for my liking. Yeah, I will stick to it. I will send the names to the national assembly.”
