The widespread speculation over the
status of debt that was left behind by former Governor Kwankwaso of Kano
state to his predecessor has been confirmed by the information
commissioner, Comrade Muhammad Garba, who revealed that contractors
alone were owed the sum of N105billion.
There had been series of denials from the camp of the
ex-governor who became furious with the disclosure of the
debt profile that was left over by his administration through
the state deputy governor, Hafiz Abubakar, during the
presentation of the Transition Committee Report.
It will be recalled that the former governor while handing over, explained that his administration executed over 1262 projects across the 44 local government areas of the state with the resources at his disposal, thereby foreclosing any issue about debt for the state.
Comrade Muhammad Garba, while speaking with some journalists at his Office on Thursday October 22, said that, it is true the new administration has inherited debt profile running into several billions of naira which forced contractors handling major projects in the state to abandon various sites due to non-payment of certificates of the executed jobs done so far.
He added that, the administration of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is the continuation of the Kwankwaso’s regime hence the spirited effort by the government to obtain a concessional bailout loan from the federal government and the Central Bank of Nigerian which will enable completion of all the projects and initiation of new ones
The commissioner expressed confidence in the state of preparedness of the Ganduje administration to champion the transformation projects across the state embarked upon by his predecessor and appealed to the people of Kano to rally-round the governor to achieve the desired changes.
