The United Kingdom has again reiterated
its commitment to support the government of President Muhammadu Buhari
in its fight against corruption.
The British Foreign Office addressed a letter to the press secretary of the All Progressives Congress Uk Chapter, The Leadership said.
In the letter, the Foreign Office’s Magdalena Williams noted that “it is an important time in Nigeria,” adding that the Prime Minister, David Cameron stands “ready to support President Buhari and his new Government on his clearly stated priorities” – one of which is to tackle corruption.
Looking forward to working with President Buhari, “in the fight against the terrorist group, Boko Haram”, the United Kingdom expressed new hope of building “excellent platform for a new beginning to a long-standing partnership.”
The UK government reiterated that effort would be made to help Nigeria’s Commander in Chief in “stabilizing the economy in the face of low oil prices.”
The support from the UK government is coming a few days after a group of Nigerians known as Nigerians March Against Corruption marched to the Presidential Villa in Abuja as well as Lagos to show their support for president Buhari’s anti-corruption crusade.
President Buhari made public his plans to engage Nigerians in the Diaspora in the anti-corruption war. The Federal Government is expected to declare open the 2015 Diaspora Day/Conference today, Wednesday, August 26. Buhari’s government has often hinted that the expertise of Nigerians professional living abroad would be sought in prosecuting the ongoing fight against corruption.
In a related development, former president Olusegun Obasanjo recently re-affirmed his support for President Buhari’s regime. Hosting the leadership of the National Association of Nigeria Students, (NANS) at his Hilltop residence in Abeokuta, Obasanjo said there is a ray of hope in Buhari.
“For me these points that you have made about what is going on in this country, about corruption, about the economy, about security, we all know these and that is why some of us are prepared to stick out our neck to achieve change.
“We have seen a ray of hope in President Buhari, so I will say let us be objective where we need to be objective, let us show solidarity where we need to show solidarity,” he urged.
