Despite a late arrival to the games, Siasia’s team put up a spirited
performance at their opening match to defeat the Japanese team.
Samson Siasia has described the first victory of the Nigeria U-23 national team at the ongoing Rio 2016 Olympics as a miracle.
In
a report by Punch Newspapers, the coach attributed the 5-4 victory over
Japan to sheer miracle saying the team's performance defied science.
In his words, “I
just can’t describe what happened today. My boys defied science to win
this game; what gave us this game was the mental toughness of the boys.
For a team not to train for two days and put up this type of performance
is a miracle.”
Continuing, Siasia said, “When
players are tired they tend to lose focus. That is why we conceded four
goals. For now, all I can say is I just want to go and savour this
victory with my players."
Despite a late
arrival to the games, Siasia’s team put up a spirited performance at
their opening match to defeat the Japanese team and climb to top of
Group B after Sweden and Colombia played out a 2-2 draw.
AS Roma’s star, Sadiq Umar grabbed the opening goal as Oghenekaro Etebo registered his name on the goal sheet with four goals to drive home the 5-4 victory over Japan.
