Italian police have arrested suspects who may have been planning attacks against targets in Italy, Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said on Thursday.
Milan police said earlier they were carrying out a "vast anti-terrorism operation" in northern Italy aimed at preventing two people from leaving the country to join Islamic State in Syria or Iraq.
Speaking in a television interview with Canale 5, Alfano said those arrested "had very nasty intentions towards our country" and may have been considering attacks.
Milan police will hold a news conference at 0930 GMT to give details of the arrests.
