A study by the CIES Football Observatory
has revealed that Man Utd paid €27.9 million more to sign Anthony
Martial while Man City paid €26.6 million more to sign Kevin De Bruyne,
goal.com reports.
The study which uses an algorithm to calculate a footballer’s market value concluded that the most over priced deals were those nearer to the close of the transfer window.
The CIES Football Observatory, estimated Martial and De Bruyne to be worth €22.1 million and €47.4m respectively but United paid an assumed sum of €50m to secure Martial’s services while City spent €74m on De Bruyne.
Liverpool were believed to have paid nearly €20m too much for Christian Benteke, who was signed for €46m but rated at €26.3m. The fourth overpriced deal of the summer sees PSG pay €63m for Angel Di Maria but the former Manchester United midfielder was valued at €47.7m
Rounding up the top five is Arda Turan who was valued at €18.8m but sold to Barcelona for €34m. Other overpriced deals include that of Morgan Schneiderlin’s move to Manchester United and Petr Cech’s cross London switch to Arsenal.
The Observatory also rated the most under-priced deals with Raheem Sterling’s switch to Manchester City surprisingly coming out on top.
The former Liverpool attacker was valued at €95.1m but City paid €63m to sign him from Liverpool.
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa’s move to Olympique Lyon (undervalued by €11.9m), Robin van Persie to Fenerbache (€11.4m), Denis Suarez to Villareal and Nathaniel Clyne to Liverpool (both €9.7m) were the reported best transfers in terms of value.
Other deals that made the top ten best value transfers are Fabian Delph switch from Aston Villa to Man City, Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic’s move to AS Roma and Inter respectively.
This are just the deals that made it through. One can only speculate if failed transfers like Paul Pogba to Juventus, Isco to Juventus, John Stones to Chelsea and David De Gea to Liverpool will be considered over/under paid for.
