Hungary to tighten laws to curb migration pressure
Hungary plans
to tighten a raft of laws next week to curb migration pressure on the
country, including using the army, if needed, to help police near the
southern border, ruling Fidesz party lawmaker Gergely Gulyas said on Friday.
Gulyas
told a news conference that the changes would affect 13 laws
altogether, some requiring two-thirds support of lawmakers, calling on
opposition parties to back the proposals.
The
proposed changes, which, if accepted, would take effect from the middle
of September, involve special transit zones near the Serbian border to
hold migrants while their asylum requests are processed.
They
also involve stronger penalties for the illegal crossing of state
borders and the damaging of a fence Hungary is building to stem the flow
of migrants.
