1. Wenger finally gets one over Mourinho
It took Arsene Wenger 14 games, but finally, the Frenchman was won a match over his bitter rival, Mourinho. Over the years, Mourinho had teased and taunted and trumpeted his incredible record. Even at his pre-match conference this week, he touched on it in the sarcastic way only Jose can. Today, he had no answer, as he finally lost.
2. Cech’s mates
There are a few goalkeepers in Petr Cech’s cla$$ and he showed why Wenger was keen to lure him from Stamford Bridge this summer. The Czech stopper was a calming presence at the back for the Gunners, who were not too organized at the back. And he did well to keep out his former team-mates when called upon. He should go on to be one of Wenger’s finest buys.
3. The new season is upon us!
As soon as Anthony Taylor blew his whistle to kick off the game, I immediately tweeted “the new season starts now!”. It might have looked a bit forward, but the Community Shield is the annual curtain raiser. It tells you that the next weekend, the race to become England champions resumes. And we kick off at Old Trafford, where Manchester United welcome Tottenham Hotspur.
4. Ox needs to stay healthy
Talking about the new season, it is very important for Arsenal and Oxlade-Chamberlain that he stays fit. The winger is generally believed to be a better footballer than Theo Walcott and he has showed more glimpses in pre-season. The ability and awareness for his winning goal was just magnificent.
5. Falcao, are you the new Torres?
Mourinho was surely not pleased with Loic Remy’s limp display in the first half and yanked him off for new boy Radamel Falcao. It was more like goodbye pot, hello kettle. The Colombian who spent the last season at United was just as ineffective and did not give the Arsenal defence anything to worry about – save for one moment where he showed great movement to get in behind.
