The fortunes of a gang, specialising in snatching cars in Delta State, suffered a setback on Thursday, as three members of the gang were arrested by police detectives in Asaba, the state capital.
It was learnt that the suspects had taken some stolen cars to a refurbishing centre, located in the Direct Labour Agency area of Asaba, but the information was leaked to the police.
It was gathered that following a tip-off, detectives stormed the workshop close to a popular fuel station in the DLA area and arrested two painters working on the suspected stolen cars.
When questioned, the painters told the police that those who brought the cars for painting, would soon come around to claim them.
The ‘car owners’ were subsequently rounded up when they came to claim their ‘cars’.
A senior police officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the suspects had been on the wanted list of the police, alleging that they had been responsible for a lot of car snatching incidents in recent times.
He added that the suspected robbers operated an inter-state criminal gang, specialising in snatching flashy cars, saying the group had members in different states of the country.
The source said, “One of the suspects has just opened up, confessed and led the police to Onitsha, where they parked a stolen cars they wanted to sell before the arrest.
“As I am talking to you, the police have recovered the cars from Onitsha and currently investigating the activities of the gang.
“We also recovered two other cars from the workshop suspected to have been stolen from their owners as the painters and the suspects could not give satisfactory accounts of the cars.”
