This year’s election has been one of the most talked about and argued about, and it been keenly contested by Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Though there are about 14 other candidates, no one seems to be bothered about them. Some of the candidates from the minor political parties have even stepped down while their parties adopted either Jonathan or Buhari.
In these elections many Nigerian celebrities have been participating in the campaigns of both the PDP and the APC. While some are solidly behind Buhari, others are in favour of Jonathan. They have been attending rallies of their favoured candidates. Some have taken to social media to indicate who they will be supporting at the polls.
The likes of Ibinabo Fiberesima, Onyeka Onwelu, Kate Henshaw, Monalisa Chinda, Joseph Benjamin, Femi Ogedemgbe, and the former Super Eagles’ captain Joseph Yobo have been present at PDP rallies.
Others like Olamide, Banky W, Funke Akindele, Uti Nwachukwu, Yemi Alade and Flavour have shown their support for the APC.
Below is a list of celebrities and who they will be voting for.
Rita Dominic: In a video released on February 2, 2015, via the Audrey Silva YouTube page, the Nollywood actress Rita endorsed Jonathan for the upcoming elections, letting the public know she will be voting for him. She also listed her reasons for supporting him.
Ibinabo Fiberesima: The Nollywood actress and president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria has been at the forefront of entertainers supporting the ambition of the incumbent president, Jonathan. She recently reiterated her decision to vote for the PDP presidential candidate alongside her brothers.
In her words, “As for me, my hubby and my brothers, we would be voting for Goodluck Ebele Jonathan with our PVCs on Saturday, March 28, 2015. It’s GEJ till 2019.”
Charles Novia: The controversial Nollywood director and film maker, who is known for his criticisms and outright outspokenness, has said he will be voting for Jonathan. He took to his Twitter page to give 6 reasons Jonathan should be re-elected.
Mike Ezuruonye: The Nollywood actor Mike is one of those who have openly supported Johnathan’s re-election bid on social media. He shared a photo of him and Jonathan on Instagram with the caption, “Yes yes yes….Till 2019…Ohhhh yesssss”.
Mercy Johnson: The popular Nollywood actress has revealed that her loyalty dwells with President Jonathan. According to her, he deserves a second chance.
Toyin Aimakhu: The actress is a fan of Goodluck and she has said he is her choice for president. She claims that she can die for the PDP. She posted a photo on Instagram with the caption: “Selfie with our president…I love him very humble #mychoice’”.
Other Nollywood stars in favour of Jonathan are Segun Arinze, Omoni Oboli, Monalisa Chinda, Joseph Benjamin, Ramsey Nouah, Patience Ozokwor and others.
In the music industry, those who have shown their support for Jonathan are:
Omawumi: the singer was one of the celebrities present at the interactive session between the President Jonathan and other entertainers on January 25, 2015 in Lagos.
Sammy Okposo: the gospel singer is a known supporter of Jonathan, having featured in many jingles promoting the president’s candidacy.
Duncan Mighty: The Port Harcourt-based singer is one of the fans of President Goodluck Jonathan, his Niger Delta brother.
Others are Waje, Dbanj, Iyanya, Kcee, Sir Victor Uwaifo and Harrisong.
Sportsmen who are showing support for the PDP presidential candidate are Kanu Nwankwo, Joseph Yobo, Jay Jay Okocha and Blessing Okagbare, who says she is a die hard fan of Jonathan.
Most Yoruba actors and actresses are in support of the APC governorship candidate in Lagos so it is assumed they will also be voting for Muhammadu Buhari and his running mate, Prof Yemi Osinbajo in Saturday’s election. The likes of Desmond Elliot, Odunlade Adekola, Sola Shobowale, Yinka Quadri, Adebayo Salami, Fausat Balogun, Funke Akindele, Muyiwa Ademola, Foluke Daramola, Dayo Amusa, Jide Kosoko and others are for the APC.
Olamide: one of Nigeria’s most successful rappers endorsed the APC presidential candidate, Buhari and his running mate, Osinbajo, in the forthcoming presidential election with a song.
Nollywood Yoruba celebrities, Fathia Balogun, Muyiwa Ademola, Sanyeri,Adebayo Tijani, Wasiu Ayinde KWAM1 and Femi Adebayo are part of those drumming support for Buhari as president and Ambode as governor of Lagos state.
Meanwhile some other celebrities have not indicated who they will be voting for.
Lagbaja: popular for his masked-face is one of those who has not revealed his favourite candidate, though he is not a fan of Jonathan as he has advised Nigerians to vote him out. He, however, said he is ready to exercise his voting rights.
Uche Jombo: the actress has said she doesn’t care about APC or PDP. She wrote on her Facebook wall:
Tuface: Though he has not made mention of who he will vote for, he realesed a song asking Nigerians to vote and not fight.
Artistes like Davido and P-Square will not even be in the country on presidential election day as they have engagements out of the country.
However, many are of the opinion that these celebrities have been paid a huge amount of money to campaign for the candidates and may not even vote on that day.
