Photos: Blood trail and scissors leads to the arrest of mother who abandoned her newborn baby

A farmer found an abandoned newborn baby at his doorstep in Kampung Siantan Baru, Malaysia, today May 17.

The 51-year-old had just completed his prayers when he suddenly heard loud cries of a baby coming from outside his house around 5.30am. The man was astonished to find a baby girl abandoned on a chair in front of his house. The man immediately wrapped the baby girl in a piece of cloth and alerted the police.
Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) police chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Dev Kumar said a team was deployed to the village to investigate the case while the baby was rushed to the Serian Hospital for treatment.
Dev said the CID team led by Insp Mohd Fais Zubir found traces of blood and recovered a pair of scissors not far away from the house of the farmer.
"We believe the scissor was used the cut the umbilical cord of the baby," he said, adding that the blood trail led the CID team to the arrest of a 26-year-old woman, believed to be the mother of the baby, within the same housing estate.

"The woman appeared weak when police conducted checks inside her house. Our men also found traces of blood in one of the rooms," said Dev.
The woman was sent to the Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching for treatment where she will be subsequently arrested under Section 317 of the Penal Code for abandonment of a child under 12 years of age by a parent.
