AlJazeera Network has released a video exposing Nigerian soldiers training in appalling conditions.
According to AlJazeera Network, Nigerian soldiers sent to battle the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents
in the North East have been unable to rout the sect after so many years
because they have not been given adequate and proper training
equipments as they are made to train in bathroom slippers and civilian
clothes.
The news agency, in a video it posted,
quoted a soldier who was one of the over 3,000 soldiers recently
reinstated back into the Nigeria Army on the orders of President
Muhammadu Buhari, that the troops in the video was a part of the 3rd
Armored Division.
The soldier who did not want his name mentioned, said:
“How
could somebody be training with bathroom slippers? How could someone be
training with ordinary clothes? None of us having rifle. None of us
have uniform. Majority of the soldiers are hungry.
I
believe the government released the money but, it is unfortunate that
some people have decided that is the only way of making their millions.”
But Nigeria's Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, was quick to debunk the report, stating that soldiers do not necessarily have to always train in their uniforms.
“You
don’t have to always train in uniform. Their kits are being dispatched
to their units for them to be re-kitted and to be re-armed,” Buratai said.
In
the video which lasted one minute forty-six seconds, some of the
soldiers families are shown where they are living in appalling
conditions where there is no light, potable water or hygienic toilet
facilities.
