Senate Begins Corruption Probe In Power Sector

The Senate Ad-hoc committee led by Abubakar Kyari is set to start investigation into the expenditures in power sector on Tuesday, September 8.

Vanguard reports the probe will cover resources spending since 1999, when Olusegun Obasanjo served as Nigeria’s president.
Daily Post adds the public hearing is scheduled to take place at the White House of the National Assembly at 11am. According to the statement, the panel is to investigate funds appropriated for the power sector since 1999 and the unbundling of the sector.

Cletus Ojabo, the Senate clerk, noted:
“It is expected that all those who played key roles in the power sector since 1999, including ministers and heads of government departments and parastatals, will appear before the panel.”

It should be recalled that the committee was set up in August to investigate the power funds management under the past governments. The investigation comes amid the launched anti-corruption war in the country.
Another move made by the incumbent president to bring transparency to the governmental system was the last week’s public declaration of assets by Muhammadu Buhari and Yemi Osinbajo.
