Valerie Perez, 44, became the donor to her 43-year old sister Beatrice Perez. Valeri’s healthy kidney was both successfully removed and immediately transplanted into her sister’s body through their vaginas. This is the first time a kidney transplant operation was combined with robotics, vaginal access and immediate implantation.

The leading surgeon, Frederico Sallustro, who performed the operation, said: “The procedure was executed in a single go and exclusively with robots. I have been dreaming of doing this operation for the last three years.” Both women are doing well now, Valerie came back at home the next day after the surgery, while her sister had to stay in hospital for three days.

The advantage of such a procedure is that both patients avoid an incision in their abdomen and the healing process goes faster. About 100 people in the world ihave benefited from robotic kidney transplants in the last couple of years, according to the data provided by hospital.
