Buhari To Begin Prosecuting Looters In A Few Weeks

President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed plans to begin legal proceedings on persons guilty of siphoning public funds.

Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the president issued a statement to this effect on Tuesday, August, 11.

Buhari disclosed that his government is unyielding and determined to smash the many corruption rings, as well as mitigate insecurity and widespread unemployment in the land.
The President holds that every individual found wanting as regards accountability on the national fund ‘will be in court in a matter of weeks and Nigerians will know those that had short-changed them.’
According to The Nation, Buhari’s administration is gathering facts and figures regarding Nigeria’s misappropriated funds, with which to bring the defaulters to book.
Quoting the statement from Adesina; ‘Nigeria has to break this vicious cycle before we can make progress.’

In the light of this, the President has had a meeting with General Abdusalami Abubakar and other members of his committee, stating that every defaulter who had looted public fund in any way will return every amount stolen, as well as face the full wrath of the law.
The Nation reports that there’s been a reshuffling of Nigeria’s revenue generating institutions, as part of moves to put financial issues plaguing the nation on the front burner.
The current financial and national issues are believed to have been caused from lapses of the past administrations, which explains why Buhari has created a single treasury account to help foster integrity and transparency in the current regime.

The statement further reads; ‘We have really degenerated as a country. Our national institutions, including the military, which did wonderfully on foreign missions in the past, had been compromised. But we are doing something about it. The military is now retraining and morale has been resuscitated.
‘As Petroleum Minister under Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo in the 1970s, I could not travel abroad until I had taken a memo to the Federal Executive Council asking for estacode. Now, everybody does what he wants.
‘That is why security-wise and economically, we’re in trouble.’
Meanwhile Abdusalami Abubakar and other members of the committee have encouraged the Buhari-led administration to stay focused and follow due process in the ongoing war against corruption.
In related news, President Buhari had earlier summoned former Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, for explanations on the grounds of a missing $1 billion loan, an amount originally meant for rail projects.
