Two premier league footballer have
received the backing of family, friends, clubs and English FA to reveal
they are gay, the Mirror UK reports.
It has been revealed that one of the players is an England international. Their names have not been revealed but the players are siad to be playing in the top flight of the English league.
A source told the paper: “The stigma has completely gone, and the public are far more accepting.
“It has always been such a macho game and, unfortunately, perhaps more than in any other sport, there can be an aggressive mob mentality in the stands.
“But finally the tide is turning and more and more sports people are openly gay.”
The players will announce their sexuality at the end of the current season.
Meanwhile England left-back, Luke Shaw has come out to deny he is one of the footballers belied to be gay.
Responding to a message on twitter, the 20-year-old said: “It’s not me so everyone can shut up now.”
US footballer Robbie Rogers came out in 2013 shortly after retiring from Leeds United, before signing on to play for LA Galaxy. Former Aston Villa man Thomas Hitzperger announced he was gay after he retired at the age of 31.
Footballers who are gay are believed to hide their sexuality because of the fear of media and fans backlash.
Former footballer Justin Fashanu took his life eight years after announcing he was gay and many footballers are believed to hid their sexuality in order to prevent depression and more mental issues.
