Peruvian referee Luis Garay Evia became the unlikely hero for league leaders Sporting Cristal on Sunday when he unluckily provided the winning assist in a 3-2 thriller.
Cristal remain unbeaten in the Primera division after they managed to come from behind to beat Juan Aurich, the winning goal being scored by Irven Avila in the 69th minute after a horrendous clearance hit the unsuspecting referee.
The keeper in question, Pedro Gallese, calmly collected the ball to relieve the pressure from a corner and instantly tried to set his team away on the counter attack with the game delicately posed at 2-2.
Things didn’t go to plan.
The goalie shanked his kick, hit the referee’s heel and feel perfectly for Avila to casually place the ball into the back of the net.
Nightmare.
