American law enforcement agencies accused John Ashe, the UNGA ex-president, in bribery. He is accused of taking at least $1.3 million in cash, Rolex watches, bespoke flashy suits and even a basketball court built at briber’s expense. Besides that John Ashe is accused of tax evading.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon told the press he is deeply “shocked and troubled” by the allegations against the former UNGA president.
“In return for Rolex watches, a basketball court and bespoke suits, John Ashe sold himself and the global institution he led,” told US Federal Attorney Preet Bharara, adding that “united by greed, they converted the UN into a platform for profit.”
According to prosecutors, John Ashe used his UNGA president post and position as permanent resident to the United Nations for Antigua and Barbuda to lobby the UN members promoting building a multi-billion-dollar UN-sponsored conference centre in Macau on behalf of Chinese real estate businessman Ng Lap Seng.
Besides that John Ashe organised meetings with govt officials in Kenya and Antigua to facilitate getting big development contracts for real estate tycoons. The facts of bribery took place from 2011 to 2014 when Ashe was acting UNGA president.
The investigation on that case is on-going and the law enforcement officials warned that more scandalous top-officials’ arrests are likely in the nearest future.
Robert Mugabe, the 91-year-old leader of Zimbabwe, slightly deviated from his prepared speech, while addressing the United Nations General Assembly on Monday, September 28.
“We reject the politicization of this important issue and the application of double standards to victimize those who dare think and act independently of the self-anointed prefects of our time.
“We equally reject attempts to prescribe ‘new rights’ that are contrary to our values, norms, traditions, and beliefs,” he said.
After a few seconds, Mugabe veered off his script and emotionally added: “We are not gays!”
