FIFA has announced the suspension of its
secretary general, Jerome Valcke following accusations of corruption and
mismanagement on Thursday.
Valcke, who has been with FIFA since 2003, was accused of attempting
to profit from illegal inflation of prices of match ticket at the 2014
World Cup held in Brazil.
According to goal.com, Brazilian outlet Estadao published a string of emails between Valcke and former JB Marketing consultant Benny Alon which suggested the two attempted to inflate match tickets of the 2014 World Cup and see Valcke receive 50% of the profits of the sale which amounts to about €2 million.
The e-mails further reveal that Valcke initially accepted the offer but later backed out after attempting to run for FIFA president and replying Alon that the deal was illegal.
Benny Alon, had attempted to reveal a secret deal in 2010 to sell tickets at the 2009 Confederations Cup and 2010 World Cup for prices four times what they should have been.
Following the publication of the emails, FIFA reacted by quickly suspending Valcke and releasing a statement on the development.
The statement reads: “FIFA today announced that its Secretary General Jérôme Valcke has been put on leave and released from his duties effective immediately until further notice.
“Further, FIFA has been made aware of a series of allegations involving the Secretary General and has requested a formal investigation by the FIFA Ethics Committee.”
FIFA has been dogged by accusations of corruption, bribing, red taping and illegal financial transactions in 2015. The FBI has already investigated for executives like Jack Warner and Chuck Blazer while its president Sepp Blatter is currently being investigated.
Meanwhile, FIFA has announced that Monday 11 January 2016, will be the day the best player in the world for 2015 will be awarded the prestigious FIFA Ballon D’or award in a ceremony in Zurich.
