A popular broadcaster got more than he
bargained for when an angry and jealous husband lured him into a trap,
and but for sheer providence he would have died.
Soji Omotayo had a close shave with death some weeks back when a top socialite and auto dealer, Kunle Kushimo Agarawu, allegedly pounced on him with a machete inflicting severe injuries on him.
Agarawu was said to have accused Omotayo of having an illicit affair with his wife despite the fact that Omotayo was his friend.
On Sunday, August 23, Agarawu was said to have lured Omotayo to his house at Ota, Ogun state in the morning. He was able to lure him there on the premise that he would get him a MC job, as Omotayo doubles as an event compere.
According to him, Agarawu had called Omotayo’s mobile number on Saturday, August 22, but could not reach him. The broadcaster’s personal assistant, who reportedly answered the call, had told the suspect that her boss was having a nap.
Omotayo reportedly called his friend when he woke up who then informed him of a business deal. It was said that Omotayo agreed to see Agarawu the next day, which was on a Sunday, before heading to church.
On the Sunday morning, Omotayo reportedly headed straight to his friend’s house with his PA and on getting there the suspect reportedly locked the two of them inside.
In Omotayo’s account of what happened, Agarawu first requested to speak to Omotayo’s wife on the phone and told her that she would never see her husband alive again.
“What shocked me most was that after he collected the phone from me, he told my wife he purposely invited me to his house just to kill me. He told my wife that I was dating his wife.” Omotayo recalled.
While the victim was still trying to figure out what could be amiss, the suspect reported brought out a cutlass and attempted to strike his victim, but Omotayo reportedly blocked it with his hand and there was no cut at all.
This, we learnt, surprised Agarawu, who then reportedly told Omotayo “so you have antidote for machete attack?”
This time, the suspect aimed for his victim’s head, hoping to get a cut from there to neutralise the antidote. He eventually struck gold and then inflicted several injuries to his victim, leaving him in pool of his own blood on the floor.
It is understood that his PA alerted neighbours who then called the police. The police were said to have arrived at the scene promptly and arrested the car dealer. However, he was reportedly released later in the day.
Omotayo narrated his experience on air during a popular radio programme on Faaji 106.5FM Mimi Aye (The Vicissitudes of Life), which is broadcast on Fridays from 10pm to 12 midnight, and is anchored by Otunba Yemi Odunodu.
Before this incident Omotayo and Agarawu were said to be friends and that facilitated the rapport that made his luring Omotayo to his home smooth and without suspicion.
Omotayo is a radio presenter with Faaji FM, a sister company of Africa Independent Television (AIT). He has also worked closely with the popular fuji musician, Abass Obesere.
