FIFA has confirmed the 2022 World Cup in
Qatar will start on Monday, November 21, 2022 and will end on Sunday,
December 18, 2022 which is Qatar’s national holiday.
The 28-day tournament will be the first to be held in November and December instead of the traditional June-July dates.
The dates were confirmed by FIFA’s executive committee. The committee had in March, approved the shift of dates to November December to avoid the heat of Qatar’s summer.
The 28-day World Cup is also four fewer than usual 32 days tournament and has been designed to cause less disruption to clubs and leagues that must shut down for several peak mid season weeks.
FIFA had refused to give the dates for the kick-off ceremony as it deliberated how to move the 2019-2024 schedule of international fixtures.
The new calendar mean clubs must release players who have been invited for the World Cup Monday, November 14, 2022, one week before the opening match.
International match dates for qualifiers for continental championships or friendlies scheduled for October have been moved forward four months.
The present holders of the World Cup are Germany who defeated Argentina in the Brazil 2014 final. The 2018 World Cup will be held in Russia.
