The army spokesman, Colonel Sani Usman, disclosed the information to Premium Times saying that the suspected assaulter had been accosted by the security conscious vigilante as the man was heading to the site of the planned attack.
“In the process of interrogation, the suspected terrorist blew himself off and died on the spot. The vigilante member sustained injuries and has been rushed to hospital for medical treatment by troops.
“The situation is under control as people go about their normal businesses. The Nigerian troops have has been placed on maximum alert to forestall further attack.”
Earlier this week a youth vigilance group in Lahou village of Borno state reportedly killed 17 members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect.
In another development, the dire attack was averted in Maiduguri where six suspected bombers carrying explosives were detained by the civilian JTF. One of the men confessed they had planned to attack the Monday market, which had been previously targeted several times.
