At the moment, Ile Ife, Osun state, often
referred to as the ancestral home of the Yorubas, can be best described
as a tourist town.
It has turned to a source of attraction to important dignitaries, home and abroad, who are trooping in thousands to pay their last respect to His Imperial Majesty, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Olubuse II, who passed on a few weeks ago.
As history is being made in the ancient town today, August 14, 2015, an inter-religious service is being held in honour of the king.
The on-going inter-religious service being presided over by both Christian and Muslim clerics, is taking place at Afewonro Parks, Enuwa, Ile Ife, Osun state.
The service kicked off with Christian burial rites and subsequently followed by the Muslims rites. While the service will be rounded off with Iwure- a form of traditional prayers.
The ecstatic service is being graced by important dignitaries from all walks of life in the society. These include various religious leaders, traditional rulers, prominent politicians and business tycoons, indegenes of the town who trooped up to witness the memorable occasion.
Prominent dignitaries present at the colorful occasion are Vice President, Yemi Osinabajo, Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, Senator Iyiola Omisore.
Others are Gen Yinka Adebayo, Gen Akindinade, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti SSG and Gen Akinrinade among others.
The king will be interred according to traditional rites later in the day.
Nigeria’s vice president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, in his speech, said that the late monarch lived an exemplary life.
In the same vein, the Bishop of Ife Diocese of Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Oluranti Odubogun, who was represented by Very Rev. Olusola Akanbi, said despite his wealth, the revered monarch died at “the appointed time.”
He added that the monarch’s reign brought fame and popularity to his domain, while his demise demonstrated that every man will die irrespective of their status.
