Chelsea midfield maestro,
Cesc Fabregas has been described as a player who lacks tactical
intelligence by former Liverpool defender turned Sky Sport pundit, Jamie
Carragher.
Carragher however called the Spainaird a fanstastic footballer who
has the ability to score goals, create chances and dictate play from the
centre of the pitch. The Englishman was speaking in the aftermath of Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat at Manchester City on Sunday
Carragher believes the plan to play Fabregas alongside Ramires and Matic failed to pay off as the midfielder’s slow start to the season comes under scrutiny.
“Why do you play Ramires?” Carragher asked.
“Because you’ve got someone in Cesc Fabregas who is a fantastic footballer, creates goals, scores goals, but he can’t defend – as we saw in the first 10 seconds when David Silva turns him and puts Sergio Aguero through.
“He lacks tactical intelligence, especially defensively. That’s one of the reasons Barcelona let Chelsea take him.”
He continued: “If you play him in there [central midfield], Fabregas needs protection from Matic and Ramires and he didn’t get that, especially from Ramires. The problems they had down that left side came from Ramires and Fabregas together.
Fabregas has been criticized this season for his inability to influence matches like he did last season. Fabregas was one of the star men as Chelsea won the title last season making 18 assists in the Premier League alone.
