Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari on
August 21 has expressed deep apprehension over the unfolding political
situation in Guinea Bissau.
It should be noted that Guinea-Bissau’s new prime minister Baciro Dja was sworn in Thursday despite angry protests from the ruling party, deepening a political crisis a week after the government was sacked.
Femi Adesina, presidential media aide, in a statement, said in displaying of true African solidarity and brotherhood, Buhari had sent ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo as his special envoy to intercede and assist find a solution to the crisis rocking the country.
Buhari’s spokesman revealed that Obasanjo boarded on the first leg of his mission by consulting with the incumbent chairman of the Economic Community of West African States Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Macky Sall of Senegal, in Dakar on August 20, Thursday.
He lamented that while Obasanjo was still consulting with President Sall, President Jose Mario Vaz of Guinea Bissau advanced to appoint and swear-in a new prime minister, Baciro Dja.
Adesina said this development has gotten worse the political situation in his country.
He therefore cited Buhari as appealing for peace and control in the country.
The statement reads in part, “President Buhari appeals for calm and calls on the leadership in Guinea Bissau to exercise utmost restraint and ensure the maintenance of law and order as efforts continue to resolve the current crisis.
