Speaking during an interview with the Daily Independent, Senator Lekan said that Jonathan “does not need to beg any monarch; the southern states of the country owe him their votes, ordinarily.
“If some set of people threatened to make government unsettled for him and they have done so, in order to stampede him out of power, does that spell anything good for anybody in the country? It doesn’t speak well of anyone, it doesn’t speak well of democracy, and South West is known for democratic principles”
When asked of his opinoin about the Olubadan of Ibadan endorsing Gen. Muhammudu Buhari of the All Progressive Congress, APC, the senator said “there’s nothing controversial about it, the position of Olubadan is clear as spelt out in the newspapers advertorial that followed the news of the purported endorsement and that’s what I’m aligning myself with, no more, no less.”
The senator in the same interview debunked rumours that President Jonathan visited the Alaafin of Oyo to beg for his mercy and endorsement following an earlier quarrel between both parties.
Senator Lekan also addressed rumours that the President is going hard on the Boko Haram insurgents so close to the elections so as to the general elections. He reportedly said; “before it was thought the Boko Haram insurgents would relent and see reason. And like I said, some cabal had been in control of activities until Jonathan decided to create another structure. He is coming to perform independent and be the real Ebele Jonathan.
“That is the reason for changes in tactics and strategies. It is not that he is appeasing anybody but that he is becoming independent. He is trying to shove off all those that had been hanging onto him and disturbing his performance even in the handling of the military.”
News of President Jonathan sharing dollars among monarchs in the south-west has caused a lot of tension among the royal fathers in the region.
After the president’s visit prominent traditional rulers in Osun State complained that their subjects are daily demanding their share of dollars.
