Yesterday, March 8, was the 40th International Women’s Day and this year’s edition is themed “Make it Happen.”

In commemoration of this day, Naijaloaded brings you a list of 10 inspiring Nigerian women who are worthy of recognition.
They are:
Stella Adadevoh: The Nigerian doctor was largely responsible for the early containment of the Ebola outbreak. Dr Adadevoh stopped index patient, Patrick Sawyer from leaving the First Consultant Hospital where she worked effectively nipping the epidemic in the bud.
Folorunsho Alakija: The billionaire owner of Famfa oil has unseated American, Oprah Winfrey as the richest black woman in the world.
Genevieve Nnaji: The award-winning actress has come to be viewed as the unofficial face of Nigeria’s film industry, Nollywood and was named a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) by the Nigerian government for her contribution to the industry.
She was also honoured with a chieftaincy title from Imo State in December 2014.
Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde: The actress and musician was named among TIME’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2013.
Abike Dabiri: The House of Representatives member enjoyed a successful career in journalism before moving into the world of politics where she also excelled.
Mo Abudu: The media personality is the brain behind, Moments with Mo, the first syndicated daily talk show on African regional television and Ebony Life TV, Africa’s first Global Black Multi-Broadcast Entertainment Network.
Joke Silva: The veteran actress has spent decades in Nigeria’s film industry and has come to be revered as one of the country’s movie legends.
Asa: The Nigerian musician, whose real name is Bukola Elemide, has broken grounds both in Africa and Europe and is viewed as one of the country’s greatest musical exports.
Chimamanda Adichie: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is an award-winning novelist whose book, “Half of a Yellow Sun” has been adapted into a movie of the same name. She also featured on US musician, Beyonce’s track “Flawless.”
Betty Irabor: In February 2003, Betty Irabor started Genevieve Magazine which has slowly but surely become one of Nigeria’s foremost lifestyle guides. She also founded the Genevieve Pinkball foundation, an organization which helps create awareness about breast cancer.
