Is extending John Terry's contract the best piece of business Chelsea could complete in January?
Terry has shown his value to Chelsea once again this season.
Terry was awarded for his fine form last season with a one-year contract extension that saw him become the Premier League’s highest-paid central defender should he play every week.
A basic salary of £150,000-a-week was bundled with bonuses based upon how much he played, and, having enjoyed a remarkable run of form in the Blues starting XI this season, the 34-year-old looks set to continue this campaign as Chelsea’s first-choice captain and defender.
Despite his form, there has been no confirmation that the club are willing to offer him a further extension to keep the legend at the club for another season, and whilst few would write off his ability to perform at the top level regardless of his age, the continuing inclusion of Kurt Zouma is starting to hint at Jose Mourinho building for a future with Terry no longer in the side.
However, that future should not be next season, and agreeing a contract extension with Terry should be Chelsea’s priority in the January transfer window.
Last season, the club left it until May to offer their veteran a new deal, and it was widely expected that he would be leaving the club prior to the announcement - with both Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard allowed to leave. Not only was Terry said to be annoyed with the protracted negations, but it certainly riled the crowd up to not know whether their hero would be turning out at Stamford Bridge the following season.
Having scored the opening goal at Stoke City on Monday evening, the management in West London should be looking to move to extend the deal as soon as possible. He was imperious in the centre of defence, and guiding his side to a victory in a notoriously hard ground to win at is why he is still captain of Mourinho’s side.
